MARATHON OF PALM BEACHES                  December 3, 2006
Meyer Amphitheater       West Palm Bch, Florida

This relatively new marathon got warm humid weather this time.
Race director Dave McGillivray is also race director for the Boston marathon.
James and Christine went to check it out.
James ran his slowest ever and took several IV bags to get him back on his feet. Londa crawled under the tent side to get to her man after being turned away at the entrance to the medical tent.
Christine ran her best yet and qualified for the Boston marathon!
615 finishers.

REINDEER RUN 5KM                                          December 9, 2006
St Pete Times Forum       Tampa, Florida

No PRs but still a good day for those who ran on this windy, cold day. Coach Joe ran under USATF Age-Group guideline. Melanie won the Women's title and Kristine was first Master.
Murph and Ken came over to run the race after doing their long run with the Sharks. That's way too long a warmup it also posed the problem of how to stay warm for post race festivities. So, they ran in with Rita and left prior to her collecting her award.
271 male and 279 female finishers.

JACKSONVILLE MARATHON & 1/2           December 17, 2006
Bolles High School      Jacksonville, Florida

As with many marathons, there was a mix of responses to the "how did you do" question. It was 91 percent humidity, but participants from last year said the conditions were better than the 100 percent (rain) of the past two years.
Kristine led the team in, PRing by 1:37 from her previous best set at Chicago in 2005. Anna dropped another 4:18 from her PR also set there at that same year. Holley was thrilled with her 23:46 improvement from her PR set last year at Tampa's Bank of America. But the most dramatic PR of the day is Darlene's 48:39 - amazing!
Joe again ran a National Class time with his 84.9% - that's an Age (or Performance)Graded time of 2:29:23!
In the Half, Christy was third overall woman finishing just thirty four seconds behind the leader.
Ron Ray finished the last race of his life. We had just met him and his wife Maritsa the night before the race and the couple asked Joe to begin coaching them. Darlene met and trained with Maritsa for the marathon after moving to Georgia. Ron collapsed shortly after finishing and was taken to the hospital. A police officer found Maritsa at mile 21 and brought her to be with Ron where he died. Words don't come easy in sharing this story. The family is strong. Darlene reports that Maritsa has vowed to return and finish the marathon next year as she is sure that her husband Ron would have wanted her to do that.
There were 588 Male and 310 Female finishers in the Marathon.
There were 597 Male and 594 Female finishers in the Half.
