MARINE CORPS 1/2 MARATHON                      October 7, 2006
Jacksonville, Florida

The first cold (a relative term in Florida) front of the season arrived to coincide with the start of this annual event, run along and back and forth across the St John's river in the heart of Jacksonville.
Tony Black, in deep training to beat Lance Armstrong in the November 5 New York City Marathon, PR'd on this mildly hilly course, beset by strong winds concurrent with the northern weather arrival.
The sport of running is alive and strong in Jacksonville, with 468 Females and 606 Males finishing the 13.1 mile race.

RACE FOR THE CURE 5KM                                  October 7, 2006
Straub Park       St Petersburg, Florida

In terms of the spirit of the event, nothing tops Race for the Cure. Thousands of runners and walkers participated, with pink the overwhelming prevalent color of the day and hundreds of memorials to family members and friends pinned to the runners' shirts. The event raised huge revenue for research in the medical fight against breast cancer.
Relative to racing, some improvement seems apparent. An unannounced firing of the starter's pistol, which occurred unexpectedly during prerace announcements, created interference with the two pace vehicles, which were sitting dormant 10yds in front of the start banner and the three thousand eager entrants.
Due to unusual terminology on the entry form, many runners failed to check the correct box that would have given them a timing chip for scoring. They hence arrived at the finish untimed and unscored. In our Forerunners results, we ignored this glitch, and placed our runners in the correct order and time as closely as we can.
Ali, Laure, and Kris finished 3, 4, and 6 overall. Jim and Kraig were scored at 2nd and 3rd overall but there were several "unchipped" runners ahead of them including the unidentified first overall male who ran 18:06. Coach Joe B was the overall Grandmasters (50+) winner.
The lone PR (personal record) time went to Karen who is training hard for Chicago, her first marathon.
Complete results of the top 100 finishers with chips are published on Cool Running. Our results below are a combination of these results plus times Mrs Coach was able to jot down while standing at the finish line. Please let us know if we missed you or got your time wrong ...
There were thousands participating in both the 5KM and 1Mile.

STEAMTOWN MARATHON                                October 8, 2006
Scranton, Pennsylvania

Perfect cool, dry, and windless running weather greeted our Forerunners group at this old railroad town in central Pennsylvania. Running on a healing hamstring injury, Bess Anderson got her Boston qualifying time with five minutes to spare. Mike Jensen struggled in the second half after a fast start that resulted in foot cramps. Training pals Jim McDannel and Chris Coleman finished but five minutes apart.
Overall winners received $3000 prize money. Does anyone think womens winner Susannah Kvasnicka is really from Great Falls, Virginia?

3RD ANNUAL CHAMBER CHALLENGE 5KM
Gulfport, Florida                                                      October 14, 2006

Attendance was up from last year for this event closer to home for St. Pete runners. It could be the cooler temps we are enjoying are also tempting the running population back to road races!

JOHN HOLMES 50KM                                         October 14, 2006
Croom Trail     Withlacoochee State Forest     Brooksville, FL

In it's fifteenth year, the Croom Trail run officially changed names as a memorial to John Holmes who was a long term Forerunners member and also one of the founders of this event. John was a good friend to all who knew him and was well known in the ultra running community. The course is three loops, 50km (31.07 miles) of trails, tree roots, and sand, deep in the grandeur of the State Forest.

The winner's splits were not published in full. He was penalized by four minutes on the bike and/or second transition but clearly remained in first place. Kristine represented our club very well as fifth in her age group for the three disciplines ... and was first in the run.
Congrats to thirty year old Amy Keener, who did track workouts with us as a visitor leading up to this event. She was tenth overall woman and third in her age group in the full Ironman event with a time of 12:49:21.
