DUNEDIN BEACH TRIATHLON                                 June 4, 2006
Honeymoon Island     1/4, 12, 3.1mi                       Dunedin, Florida

The heat is on and our triathletes are beating the heat with some cross training. Bernie, Hal and Tim did this one last year and all improved on their overall time.... ranging from six minutes and six seconds for Hal to just over thirtyfive seconds for Bernie! The swim conditions were way different than last year as times were in double digits for everyone and this year most participants completed it in under ten minutes. It was more like body surfing against the waves last year!
Splits are shown below. Transition 1 and 2 are on either side of the run.

3RD ANNUAL SUBARU SPRINT TRIATHLON
Spa Beach       Downtown St Petersburg, Florida
Swim .75, Bike 20, Run 5KM                                    June 11, 2006

Brianne led decisively the entire way ... she even flew into the water at the start first! A wonderful cloud cover helped keep temperatures tolerable and all who participated seemed to enjoy. Forerunners manned an aid station for the event on very short notice and had lots of fun handing out water and encouragement. Thanks to Christine Arbasak, Chris Coleman, Ali Crabb, Jennifer Cubito, James & Londa Duncan, Ginger Herring, Marcia Horan, Sheila King, Blake Lusty, Jim McDannel, and Dave & Jennifer Willis for helping Coach Joe!
There were 212 finishers in the Sprint.
Splits are shown below. Transition 1 and 2 are on either side of the run.

19TH ANNUAL MAD BEACH TRIATHLON         June 18, 2006
Madeira Beach, Florida      Swim .5, Bike 15, Run 3.1MI

The bike course was changed from last year due to a dispute about traffic and traffic control. And as such was shorter than the advertised distance.
Winner Robert Skaggs' chip came off in the swim. So, his official splits are unknown.
Brianne was second last year and won it this year. Husband Marty won last year and placed second this time. They live in Apopka and have family ties here. Brianne's maiden name is Harrington. Even as a pre-teen she was a fierce competitor as well as a former Forerunner.
Years ago, when the high school coaches would not give her permission to run along with the high schoolers in a cross country meet with girls far older, She said "Wait til next year, I'll crush them all!" And she did. Some athletes in these results are vistors to the track or past members who have recently reentered competition. Their results are included for you along with current members.
Interestingly, Kelly who chose this event as her first triathlon had the exact same time as Shawn who did her first one at the Olympic distance at St Anthony's last April when swimmers had to negotiate through swells kicked up by the winds! Kelly and Shawn's splits vary widely. As did Joe's with the 4th place finisher, Bill Terlop, in his age group who matched his time exactly and was given 4th place because Joe was allowed to start with the novice athletes due to his swimming dilemna. A strict definition of novice was enforced whenever possible. ie;One who has never participated in a triathlon previously.
The division will be named first timer in the future to clear up any confusion for beginners who haven't developed their confidence in participation in all three disciplines and feel that they still belong in the novice division.
Mitchell who has been suffering with bad shin pain led our men in while Christina who has been finishing second to Brianne the past few weeks, led the women.
Erin was just ahead of Rick and both were pleased with their improvent on the swim. Dan McClenathan, the swim coach for Shorecrest this past year and missing from track practice because of it can claim the biggest swim improvement after Coach Joe.
In honor of the day, Beth Wonicker-Cook and Carol Glasscock watched and waited with the children as their spouses took their turn at competition on Father's Day.
There were 17 teams comprised of two or three athletes sharing their efforts in various team divisions. Tony Black's team "Powered By Christ"comprised of Judge Tony and two friends from church won the male division by a half a minute.
There were 422 Men and 207 Women individual finishers.
Splits are shown below. Transition 1 and 2 are on either side of the run.
