FORERUNNERS MAY 2003 RACE RESULTS

4TH ANNUAL SPARTAN SPRINT 5KM                    May 2, 2003
Pepin Rood Stadium       Tampa University       Tampa, Florida

Jim Rogan did a rocket blast off start, loosing his first stage at about 1.2 miles. New Forerunner (February 2003) Karen Collins ran to her second in a row PR time, and Kim Bruce led all women masters. No age division awards in this certified course event. The top 50 men and women received glass mugs in the finish chute, while older runners were left to ponder those halcyon days. 206 men and 118 women finishers were recorded.

Laurie says this course, advertised as fast and flat, had some surprisingly inimical hills. It was also cold, but that's Canada in the Spring. Laurie missed her 3:50 Boston qualifying time.

BULL STAMPEDE 5KM                                               May 10, 2003
Pizzo Elementary School - USF Campus      Tampa, Florida

This was Steve Reed's first race since moving back to Florida after five years in Virginia. Our guy was greeted by the unseasonable heat and humidity that blanketed the area for the beginning of May. 111 sweated through this first time event.

18TH ANNUAL MAD BEACH MAD DOG TRIATHLON
Madeira Beach, Florida
Swim 1/2 mi, Bike 15.5 mi, Run 3.1mi                     May 18, 2003

The overall women's winner (although credited in the local news to 23 year old Brianne Harrington who entered as Elite), was 45 yr old Kathleen Kay in 1:16:28. 40 yr old Lisa Plescia was next in 1:17:41, followed by Harrington's 1:19:19.
To further confuse the results, team times were mixed in and skewed the overall places. Mike Ferreira was listed as 10th, but was really 7th. Erin smoked this one for sixth overall while Mike and Ian owned the M35 division. Lenore Rupert graduated to the sprint triathlon after a successful debut at the Meek & Mighty last month.

RUN FOR FREEDOM 5KM                                          May 31, 2003
Highwoods Preserve       Tampa, Florida

47yr old Mary Ann smoked the women's race to once again prove her position as the top runner in her age division in the Southeastern United States. 43yr old Amy followed closely in second place. Like almost all uncertified courses, this one was apparently a bit short of the 5km distance. 154 men and 132 women finished.
