FORERUNNERS APRIL 2003 RACE RESULTS

TEMPLE TERRACE ROAD RACES                           April 5, 2003
Recreation Center

10KM - 69 finishers. 5KM - 152. Low participation numbers for this long-term event, which has dwindled ever since the Tampa Bay Runners Club moved their popular Strawberry Classic from Plant City to this same Temple Terrace course several years ago.

KIDS FOR KIDS 3.8 MILE & 5KM                             April 5, 2003
Ft DeSoto Park       St Petersburg, Florida

No one really knows who ran what distance here. At least the first twenty runners had no indidcation of the turn-a-round point on the out and back course and ran way past it. At some point someone did show up, but even then the times indicate that the distance was long. 217 finishers, all of whom started on an eight foot wide bike path.

11TH ANNUAL TAKE FITNESS TO HEART 10KM
Tampa U Pepin Rood Stadium      Tampa Florida    April 12, 2003

With a certified course, a finish on the University of Tampa track, and prize money, it's amazing and disappointing that only sixty women ran this event. There was also a companion 5km with 300 runners, but the 10km was the main event. Blame it on insufficient publicity or apathy, but regardless, poor attendance will cause us to lose higher quality events like this one. No one was close to Lisa in the women's masters division.

107TH BOSTON AA MARATHON                         April 21, 2003
Hopkinton to Boston, Massachusetts

A Forerunners Boston first…..no one set a PR on this warm and windy day. Steve was closest with one second over his best at Chicago 2000. It was still a successful team day. Requalifying times are noted by "R" in results below where PR's are usually displayed. Our Masters women's team starred! The scoring team members were Lisa, Mary Ann and Kim. Together they beat by over 16 minutes, last year's Masters record time, held by the Whirlaway Racing Team of Massachusetts. Our gals' combined clock time of 9:14:18 also bettered this year's winning open women's team by two minutes. Wonder what will be said about that in the Boston results book. Lisa also finished 4th overall among the female masters runners, only 2-1/2 minutes off the Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying time, taking home $1500 for her race.

ST ANTHONY'S TRIATHLON                                 April 27, 2003
Straub Park       St Petersburg, Florida

St Petersburg's waterfront triathlon, a showcase of our downtown area, was both grand and a bit weird this year. The inclusion for the first time of an "open" division, in which anyone could enter, all of whom started with the first of many "waves" brought confusion into race statistics. The top ten "open" finishers were not the ten fastest times, as those who registered "age group" started at various intervals (waves) after the open division. Add in the relay folks, and no one, including the participants, knows their standing until the computers start printing results. This is an inherent problem in almost all triathlons, but the unnecessary inclusion of an "open" division further complicates the event. Will Watson became our youngest ever Forerunners Olympic Distance triathlete with his finish. Ian Payne smoked the event, a scant six days after his 3:04 Boston Marathon.
