25TH ANNUAL GATE RIVER RUN 15 KM            March 9, 2002
Alltell Stadium            Jacksonville, FL

Deena Drossin of Mammoth Lakes, CA broke the 12 1/2 year old U. S. Record and won $18,000 including bonuses for both the course and U. S. Records. She became the first woman to ever win 3 consecutive U. S. 15 KM road races. Meb Keflezighi of San Diego defended his 15 KM national title by running the second fastest U. S. time on the course on the twisting, hilly, tough course in humid 80 degree conditions.. (Todd Williams ran 42:22 in 1995)
All Forerunners had respectable, but not PR performances. Coach finished 6 seconds behind his age group competition. Mary Ann & Erin finished in the top 100. This is indeed a quality event that is exciting and worth the travel.
Approximately 7,000 finishers

SPRINGTIME TAMPA BAY 5KM                            March 9, 2002
Al Lopez Park            Tampa, FL

Shortly after the start, leaders took a wrong turn on this dubiously marked course at Tampa’s Al Lopez Park, throwing the race into chaos. Some runners ran too far on an early course loop, some on a later loop near the finish. None of our Forerunners could identify how far they ran, or if they ran on the intended course. All were surprised to find that it was part cross-country, as this was not advertised. Amy won overall in a fast time for this day. 144 finished. Mile race pace shown assumes 5km. Our other choice was to leave that data off this report.

23RD ANNUAL UNICORN GALLOP 5KM
Central Park        Largo, Florida             Sunday, March 17, 2002

We had ten Forerunners at this annual event, five with the same last name. Last year there were 580 finishers. This year 200 less at 380. There’s a message here that we passed on to the WFYRC race promoters several months ago to no avail. Don’t schedule 5km events on Sundays.

20TH ANNUAL ARMADILLO 10KM & 5KM
Downtown Oldsmar, Florida                                     March 23, 2002

Tony Teats won by almost 2 minutes on this course that goes right past his house. Steve Wilcox led our men after a late night flight and two airport double cheese burgers for dinner. Mary Ann, Laurel, Maria and Rosemarie all PR’d. Erin tied hers with a flailing dash to the finish and chute fouling heaving. 251 finished into a strong headwind on this flat as a pancake excellent 10km venue.
In the 5km, the lead pack made their turn-around at 2 miles, but then, apparently in deep race focus, failed to notice the right turn arrow shortly after. Our guy Chris Zucker followed on sub 19 5km pace. Looking at his watch at 22 minutes, and wondering where in the heck he was, Chris astutely turned around and scrambled home in 27 minutes. 229 finished this one. A special Sherrif’s scouting party was sent looking for the first twenty or so leaders who never returned.

Headwind going north for 1.5 miles on the exposed beach, then tailwind coming back south. We never have figured out if one cancels out the other. Additionally, one wag participant, apparently dissatisfied with his time, took a couple of GPS readings and declared to anyone within earshot that the course was 1/10th mile long. 109 finished.
