FORERUNNERS OCTOBER 2002 RACE RESULTS

10TH ANNUAL STETSON LAW RUN 5KM       October 5, 2002
Stetson College of Law      Gulfport, Florida

Why this race doesn't draw 500 people is a mystery. The setting at Stetson College, originally built as the Rolyat Hotel is right out of Architectural Digest. The course distance is certified (FL980098DL), and entirely on neighborhood streets with every cross street monitored. The non-rip off entry fee includes a pancake, bagel, fruit and homemade bread breakfast. Awards are quick and announced during the breakfast in the huge 50ft high ceiling dining hall. In short, it's a race for runners, with no charities, no pledges, just simple competitive racing. 111 finishers.

7TH ANNUAL POLICE MEMORIAL 5KM        October 12, 2002
Lykes Gaslight Park     Tampa, Florida

Like the Stetson Law run the previous week, the Police Memorial 5km is another "sleeper" race that should draw out every running enthusiast within a fifty mile radius. The $10 entry fee included enough food to regain a weeks worth of running calories, and two tickets to a Tampa Bay Lightning hockey game. Awards were crafted out of marble and onyx. No plastic here! Another race for runners. No causes, no pledges, just simple competitive racing. The three Forerunners women entered ran 2-3-4. There were 554 participants.

CHICAGO MARATHON            Grant Park      October 13, 2002

With a women's world record and four men under 2:06:20, this was obviously a good day for racing through the streets of downtown and outlying Chicago. Jennifer and Mark qualified for Boston for the first time, while Hank reached his six-year goal of running sub 3 hours. Rick PR'd by half and hour and Alan ran well under his goal of 4 hours. John ran his first marathon and Bryan, fresh off Ironman Wisconsin, paced his Sister. There were few disappointments on this day, none among the Forerunners.

3RD ANNUAL KESWICK 2.95 MILE CROSS COUNTRY
Keswick Christian School       St Pete, FL          October 19, 2002

Returning member Julie Choat, who ran with Forerunners in high school before moving away to college and marriage, won this partial cross-country race around the Keswick (pronounced Kessik) campus. Race officials chose a weird set of 5 year age groups to the dismay of Mike, who turned 55 a few weeks ago and thought he was being scored in his new division. Dan won the 46-50 age group!

Cancelled in 2001 due to the September 11 terrorist attacks, this year's version was run under heavy security due to the sniper who kept the Washington area on guard for several weeks. Heavily armed Army personnel were stationed on the roof of the Pentagon and at strategic locations on the course.

GREAT WEST CHASE 5KM                                October 26, 2002
Westchase Village Plaza      Tampa, Florida

Some confusion surrounded this race when a Clearwater HS runner ran the course, finished ahead of everyone, took the trophy (somehow) and left for home, all without ever paying the $20 day of race fee. We have disqualified and omitted him in these results. Race promoters said the course was certified. Due to traffic control setup, the start command came 40 minutes late. 141 women and 131 men finished.
