52 yr old Mary beat all the girls except two. Ken was one of four 50-59yr olds in the first seven finishers. It was a fine day for racing in Nova Scotia, where the leaves are already starting to turn.

24TH WARHOOP SPRINT 3 MILE CROSS COUNTRY
Lake Seminole Park     Seminole, Florida       September 7, 2002

The 24th annual running of this event saw the advent of a new and true cross-country course. As professed by the director prior to the start, "If you like grass, and trails, and trees, and water, all mixed together, you'll like this course." Highlight was the infamous Indian Creek, crossed by leaping, wading, or swimming, just past two miles. Marking the beginning of the local fall race season, this one definitely got its participants' juices jangling. Out of 105 finishers, 37 women and 51 men filled out and turned in their finish cards.

5TH ANNUAL RACE FOR THE CURE 5KM
Straub Park      St Petersburg, Florida          September 21, 2002

If seen on TV sports coverage, this event along St Petersburg's showplace waterfront parks would seem an idilic setting for a road race. What doesn't show on the tube though is the f80, 95% humidity conditions that frequent the Florida 28th parallel in late September. 41yr old Lisa Valentine led five Forerunners women in the top ten across the finish, all under 20 minutes. Karen McHugh, Diane Grieco, Carolyn Reichle, and Jim Rogan ran certified Course PR's (personal records) on this tough day. Steve Wilcox and Jim Burgasser led our men's team with 4th and 7th place overall finishes.

PEANUT FESTIVAL 5KM        Plains, GA     September 28, 2002

Old Don was crusin' along pretty good in this one, then got overenthusiastic with watch button pushing at 2 miles and sent his chronometer flying. Imagine farsighted Don down on his hands and knees in the street looking for the thing with his competitors whizzing by. Our guy still got to the finish first in his division though. Plains resident, former President Jimmy Carter, gave out the awards, noting that Don's time was "pretty fast for a guy your age".

GREAT RACE 10KM        Pittsburgh, PA      September 29, 2002

This has historically been a very fast course. Bob ran his fastest ever 5km for the first half of the race, then ran even faster for the second half. Kenyans took the first dozen places to lead 6,500 runners to the finish.
