FORERUNNERS JUNE 2003 RACE RESULTS

SMOOTH RAILS DUATHLON                                   June 1, 2003
Van Fleet Trails       Brooksville, Florida

Ian did the main event of alternate run/bike 2/11/2/11/2 (miles). Not wanting to duel any further with roamimg trucks out on the open highway, Lenore opted for the shorter 2/11/2 version.

SPRING INTO SUMMER 5KM                                    June 7, 2003
Al Lopez Park       Tampa, Florida

Rather than the usual Al Lopez course, this event used a course certified in 1998 for the Avon Women's 5km. Resulting times were slower than usual, apparently due to the accuracy of the certified course.

PIER 60 BEACH 5KM #1                                            June 13, 2003
Pier 60      Clearwater Beach, Florida

Hard packed flat sand and cooling breezes were reported for this first race of the sixth season for these fine low entry fee events. Resurgent Walt Sieg led the Forerunners finishesers and 86yr old Jack Parr was the first finisher in the 75+ division. Ginger Herring started, but somehow never arrived at the finish. Something about her inhaler, and everything going black.
187 finishers.

BEAT THE HEAT #1 3.07 Mile                                  June 14, 2003
E.L. Bing Park       Brandon, Florida

With low entry fees, minimal awards, and no frills, this three race summer series is a throwback to the old days of local running. The small attendance is likely due to the series oddly not appearing on the local "Race Place Magazine" calendar. 47yr old Mary Ann was the third overall finisher.

FORERUNNERS INTRAMURAL 5000 METERS TRACK RACE
June 17, 2003 (St Petersburg)                  June 25, 2003 (Tampa)

No surprise, the first of our 2003 Summer Intramural Track Races were greeted by atrocious heat and humidity. We note that there are no National Championship races held in Florida. Further, there are but two races over 5km anywhere in the state in the Summer months, and one of them is run at Midnight. Consider then that adamantine Ian Payne forged out a better than his road PR 17:18, and Mary Ann Protz, who has been tearing up the young girls on the road all Spring, clocked in at 19:30. Lots of PR's in this 12-1/2 lapper. If it was your first ever track 5000, that designation was automatic when you stepped on the finish stripe.

PICNIC ISLAND ADVENTURE RUN                       June 20, 2003
Approximately 3 miles                  Picnic Island       Tampa, Florida

They ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles and they ran through the bushes where a rabbit wouldn't go. Lauri ran so fast that no girls could catch her, up and down, over and back, to the Gulf of Mexico. Well... Tampa Bay anyway. No age divisions in this race, but we've shown as though it did.

FIRECRACKER 10KM     Daytona Beach, FL         June 22, 2003

In its 25 year history, this was one of Florida's classic club races. Then in a short three year span, DBTC directors changed it in steps from a Saturday to a Sunday event, reversed the direction of the out and back beach course, and finally cut the distance from 10 miles to 10km. We will no longer use the word "classic" in describing the event. Our guy Jim finished fifth overall.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 5KM                                       June 28, 2003

Grabbing the first opportunity for Independence Day festivities, this event chooses the weekend prior to fireworks day. Mary Ann provided her own fireworks, running away with the women's race in 18:45 for her fourth consecutive overall win. In case you don't know Mary Ann, at age 47 she is well past the age where people are supposed to be winning races overall.
