106TH BOSTON MARATHON
Hopkinton to Boston, MA                                            April 15, 2002

Always a truly special event, this year was espiecially so, in that everyone did well, with not a single crash and burn - and that’s with seven running their first Boston . Lisa and Coach went up to get their awards accompanied by wild cheering from our ranks in the ultra posh venue. Both of our women’s teams (Open & Masters division) were 2nd. At this level, a major achievement. Huge PRs by Mike and Mark! Mary Ann also bettered her previous best at Chicago in 2000 by 3 minutes on this prestigous and very difficult course. Requalifiers are indicated by "R"

6TH ANNUAL RUN IN THE WOODS CROSS-COUNTRY
Booker Creek Preserve     Tarpon Springs, FL     April 20, 2002

This slowly growing event is building a good reputation. The course winds through the deep woods of the Booker Creek Nature Preserve. Five year division awards are hand made and don’t merit immediate chucking, and the entry fee is much kinder to the budget than most other races.

ESCAPE FROM FT DESOTO TRIATHLON
Ft DeSoto Park            St Petersburg, Florida         April 20, 2002
Swim 1/2 mile, Bike 15.5 miles, Run 3.1 miles

Known for strong, swift, dangerous currents, the waters off Ft DeSoto Park lived up to their reputation on this warm morning. Race directors elected for an out and back swim rather than the usual parallel to the beach in these waters. It was a dubious decision, with swimmers swept under the fishing pier, several emerging with multiple cuts and contusions from the pilings.

RIVERFEST 6.45 MILE     Columbus, Georgia      April 27, 2002

6.45 miles is an approximation on this one. It was supposed to be a 10km, but not according to the times recorded. Suspicious, Don hopped in his SUV and clicked off a "heavy 6.4" before trading his sneakers and shorts for fancy boots and jeans, and heading home to his wild west town of Manchester.

ST ANTHONY’S TRIATHLON     (S 1.5MI B 40KM R 10KM)
St Petersburg, FL                                                        April 28, 2002

It’s hard to tell who is leading in most triathlons because of the wave start. The winner here crossed the finish line well after the 1st man, but had started in a later wave. Many Forerunners spent their Sunday morning passing out water to competitors at the 3-1/4 mile aid station of the run. All had a great time cheering on our team members and friends in the race as we toiled away! Mike Ferreira completed the event, including a 40:30 time for the finishing 10km run, sixteen days after arthroscopic knee surgery. Don’t try this at home!
