STRAWBERRY 10KM & 5KM                              March 11, 2006
Temple Terrace, Florida

This is another event that used to offer prize money race and was on a few Nationally ranked elite runners calendar following their Gasparilla payday. It has been downsized over the past several years starting with the course change from the certified one in Plant City in the halcyon days ... right after Gasparilla stopped courting elite athletes.
Ken went out way too fast and kicked himself about it later. Ginger was happy with her evenly paced run in the hills of Temple Terrace. Don was happy to be there ready to run. Tony appears to be ready for Boston as he didn't even notice the hills!
Dan and the Rileys who join us at track seasonally did well in the 5km.
There were 61 male, and 54 female finishers in the 10km.
There were 138 male, and 126 female finishers in the 5km.

29TH ANNUAL GATE RIVER RUN 15KM           March 11, 2006
Alltel Stadium      Jacksonville, Florida

Both Paula and Mike bettered previous PRs set a few weeks ago at the Gasparilla 15KM on this rolling and challenging course. Paula, by over six minutes and Mike won his age group by over five while also beating the Grand Masters record for the distance set by Bill Rogers eight years ago! Bill, now age 58, ran 1:07:06 this year for 12th in the age group.
David and James had also hoped to take their personal bests further than accomplished at Gasparilla. The trouble with the rare chances at this interesting distance is that they are too close together and travel is usually necessary.
Beth has been attending track on occasion, so we thought her fine performance at this high profile race should be reported here.
There were about 4,250 men and 4,150 women finishers.

TROUT CREEK TRAIL RACES 15KM & 5KM
Thonotosassa, Florida                                               March 11, 2006

These two trail events, 15km and 5km, remotely located in the backwoods of Thonotosassa, were quite popular as shown by the number of participants. We runners apparently enjoy getting off the roads. David and Kit did.
There were about 62 men and 58 women finishers in the 5km.
There were about 66 men and 58 women finishers in the 15km.
Note: The race did not have age group awards. If it had, this is what they would look like.

SHAMROCK 'N RUN 5KM                                     March 11, 2006
Largo, Florida

This inaugural event inexplicably replaced the 25+ year old Unicorn 5km, a favorite among local runners, and was run on an uncertified course rather than utilizing the certified Unicorn course. There may be logical rationale behind these baffling decisions, but host WFYRC appears to be slip sliding away in terms of quality events.
There were 52 male and 52 female finishers.

ARMADILLO 10KM & 5KM                                  March 18, 2006
Oldsmar, Florida

As usual, the tee-shirt was imaginative. This year showing the winning Armadillo in a lounge chair while runners are looking at holes in the road and at him in the chair with puzzled expressions. Boston bound Andy Scavelli was the runner who won the race overall by over a minute. He acknowledeged this was a slow time for this course and event. Thirteen year old Alyssa Burkert won by well over four minutes!
A fine showing for the team with all 1st place age groups with the exception of David and Wendy winning Masters and Grand Masters. David also PR'd by just over a minute from his time at Turkey Trot last November!
Debra Donald who is a regular at the Sunday run was happy with the win! Kit finished second but was not entered. Scott who is a regular at both track and the Sunday run is steadily improving his fitness and times. Tony was 3rd overall and received a larger tile than the age groupers got with the tee-shirt artwork on it. He also got a new certified PR!
89 male and 64 female finishers in the 10K.
110 male and 103 female finishers in the 5K.

SHAMROCK MARATHON                                     March 19, 2006
Virginia Beach, Virginia

In spite of 13 consecutive miles into a 15-20mph headwind, many runners managed to take advantage of a final 10km with the wind at their backs, and finish with personal bests in this 34th edition of the Shamrock Marathon. Local favorite, Renee High, captured the woman's marathon crown. Another Virginian, Michael Wardian, of Arlington, finished first among the men.
Karen slashed minutes from her previous PR and Maria came within a minute of hers on this windy day!
1149 men and 589 women finished this 26.2 mile windfest.

4TH ANNUAL RUN FOR THE REC 5KM             March 25, 2006
Belleair, Florida

Mike was third to two 18 yr olds in his second try at the record for his age group under windy conditions. He and Paula are wintering here from Newfoundland, Canada, enjoying races in our mild Florida weather. They were impressed with the full breakfast served post race complete with white table linens ... Bellair style!
Carolyn, who lives in the neighborhood signed up and walked with a friend. Duncan continues to dominate his age group!
104 male and 94 female finishers.
