4TH ANNUAL SUNCOAST CLASSIC 5KM & 10KM
Baywalk       St Petersburg, Florida                  February 11, 2006

Pediatric Services of Florida offers a $5000 prize purse of $600 -$500 - $400 - $300 - $200 for the 10KM and $225 - $125 - $75 - $50 - & $25 for the 5Km to attract top performing runners.
Jeanne Lesniak and Steve Wilcox were in the money in the 5KM! Anna PR'd then prepared herself for a half marathon the next day.
In the 10KM, Christine and Karen bettered their Personal Records with Karen vowing to break 40 this season. The Goofy Challenge buddies continued their antics and did a fifteen mile warmup – and Jim still PR'd! Thankfully, Coach Joe made a miraculous recovery from last weekend's bout with a bacterial virus that may have done permanent damage to the Burgasser toilet. Hunter ran the distance accompanied by Mom while Dad is recovering from meniscus surgery.
There were 169 male, and 174 female finishers in the 5KM.
There were 139 male, and 116 female finishers in the 10KM.

MAX BAYNE 1/2 MARATHON                         February 12, 2006
Ft Desoto Park       St Petersburg, Florida

Christy displayed her pure athleticism running against fierce wind for another win ... this time in under her 6:30 goal pace. Maria, also on a strict goal pace won Grandmasters and PR'd by thirteen seconds. Jan did also, by running the distance for the first time. Anna ran a second personal best of the weekend ... a nice accomplishment and birthday present to herself!
Christian and Bill, seasonal visitors to the Forerunners secret track workouts, led our men to the finish line... Walt was right on their heels with his newly edited svelte figure. Watch out, this guy can run when he's in shape!
Jon Kieffer was second overall and first Master in the less brutal event.
Many thanks to our course volunteers – Bernie Brown, Duncan Cameron, Chris Coleman, Marcia Horan, Tim Hudson, Anna Reschar's Husband, (Brian) Mom (Dia) and friend (Sigga). Walt suggested that there may have been more volunteers than runners. Cold and windy conditions made it challenging, but still fun in a sick sort of way that few can understand ... THANKS!
65 male, 32 female finishers in the Half.
7 male, 8 female finishers in the 5KM.

EDISON FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS 5KM             February 18, 2006
Ft Myers, Florida

Due to construction this usually technically sound race was not run on the customary certified course. Unfortunatley this was not mentioned until racers arrived at the starting line. Mike was the first Grand Master and won $100. His new PR would break the Canadian M55 record, set in 1988 had the race been run on a certified course.

RunBikeRun on a lot less chilly day than the week before. That's Florida for you. The one thing you can be sure of when entering an event at Ft DeSoto ... there will be at the very least a stiff breeze... more likely a gale force wind.

BANK OF AMERICA GASPARILLA 15KM
Tampa, Florida                                                       February 25, 2006

Both winners are repeats from last year successfully defending their titles. Mike Coyne was second overall in the race if it were scored as age graded at 87% followed by coach Joe and Bill Riley as third and fourth at 86.7% and 86.5% respectively. These are all National Class (80-89%) percentages in "Age Graded" speak. World Class is 90% and above. Christy also made the top 10 with her 80.7% performance even though she was sick on race day. Overall, age graded was a 61 yr old woman from Burlington, Massachusetts who ran an an incredible 1:05:42 that factors out to 88.3%.
Check out all the PRs ... Dennis, Christine, Paula, Lyndy and Sara all did the distance for the first time so their PRs are automatic. Sara made it a couples outing and walked it with her husband, Ed who is not a runner. Mark's PR* is noted with an after heart surgery asterisk. He really is starting over again with a revised heart function and deserves a clean PR slate.
Both Kit and Kristine were seen crossing the finish line at approximately the times shown below but were not shown in the official results.
There were 2,017 male, and 1,549 female finishers.

BANK OF AMERICA GASPARILLA 5KM     February 25, 2006
Tampa, Florida

Youth prevailed in the sprint event as both winners are under 20. Our own Kyle and Chuck's son Hunter asked to and participated in this huge event ... running with crowds like this can be pretty scary, but they seem to take it in stride. 32 year young Jeanne was 6th overall in a strong field.
Participating in the PT Cruiser Challenge were Coach Joe (8th) and Jon Kieffer (14th). Both managed to place in the top ten in their age group for every event! Ed Bickley, age 47 was the winner with a cumulative time of 4:16:39. He was 2nd in both the 5KM and Marathon and 4th in the marathon in his age category. Andy Scavelli won the Jeep Challenge with a 2:35:42 finishing in his age group with a nod to the Olympics ... Gold the for 5K, Silver for the 15K, and Bronze for the Half.
No one actually wins a Jeep or a PT Cruiser, but participants come away with a new appreciation of each race distance and the fitness required to meet the challenge.
There were 2,971 male, and 3,500 female finishers.

BANK OF AMERICA HALF MARATHON      February 25, 2006
Tampa, Florida

Initially, there was confusion over who really won the women's race. Teresa Vaill and her identical twin Lisa clocked the same time (1:12:19/6:30.5) and were disqualified as they had both signed up for the full marathon then chose to do the half. Deb Tillman ran the race she signed up for and was finally declared the actual winner.
Tony Black's training for Boston is paying off with PRs at most every distance. Jan Conway shaved some time from her PR too. Mary Ann tried out her recovering bootie and was pleased with her progress from the most time off she has taken in years.
There were 854 male, and 916 female finishers.

BANK OF AMERICA MARATHON                  February 26, 2006
Tampa, Florida

The women's winner defended her title from last year. The expression on her face in the finish photo both years shows that she works hard for the money. The men's winner moved up from his second place finish last year. Both are Masters runners and won $8000 for the masters win plus an additional $2500 as overall winners. This is the second year that the race has weighted the big prize dollars toward Masters competitors and has received positive press for the stand.
Draceana took the most time off her prior PR paced by the task master himself, coach Joe. Ken, Sherry and Holley completed the distance for the first time and became members of the one in a million club. It is said that of the population, there is one in a million who completes their first marathon. After that first one, the person usually swears off the thought of ever doing it again - but in the next few days they are planning the next one!
711 men, and 392 women finished.
