DISNEY MARATHON                                              January 8, 2006
Epcot Center        Buena Vista, Florida

On a cold but windless day, the male winner claimed his fourth win at Disney. The first female was running her first ever race at the distance.
Mary Ann served as a fine member of Florida's Finest this year for the first time finishing third overall. Kris paced her close friend Shawn to a PR/Boston qualifier and chose to not wear her chip since she was soley in support mode. Friend Jennifer PR'd too! Lori Joyce got an automatic PR and joined the ranks of the "one in a million" club by completing her first marathon – congrats!
Mike led our men in with a PR for himself and also won his age group and would have won the Grand Master (50+) if one was awarded. Jim bettered his last year's marathon debut in this event by a whopping fourty five minutes and 25 seconds ... and he was one of the Goofy guys!
Coach is notable in his absence from these results as he has been training to break the three hour mark in a Florida marathon and had planned to do it here. Well guess what – he got the virus and bronchial troubles that has been afflicting lots of folks lately. It happens to us all ... and there are other opportunities ... stay tuned for the next chapter!

DISNEY RACE & A HALF                              January 7 & 8, 2006
The "Goofy Challenge"
Epcot Center       Buena Vista, Florida

This event intrigued the guys. So far, the overall winners and any age group award structure has not been revealed. Surely there was someone keeping track!
All participants got a special shirt plus the dri fit ones that the other marathoners and halfers got plus more commemerative goodies as a reminder of their adventure.

ST PETE BEACH CLASSIC 5KM & 10KM      January 14, 2006
County Beach Park       St Pete Bch, Florida

The event went well this year except for something that can't be put on a checklist to control – inclement weather! All racers faced sporadic cold rain and a relentless wind on this day. Some faced the harsh conditions better than others. None claimed the headwind as a friend but a few in both races did acknowledge the help from that mighty tailwind in their race effort. The path was well worn to the awards stand by our ranks.
In her first 5 KM race back after a nasty groin injury, Christine did the unimaginable - she PR'd! In the 10KM, Christy ran 3 seconds faster than last year and moved from 5th to 4th overall. Jon Wilson somehow managed to equal his time from last year and moved from 9th place in the wrong end of the 55-59 division to 2nd in his new senior masters age division. Marcia Horan, strong from her marathon training PR'd and was 5th in the wrong end of her age group. Lyndy Jennings also PR'd for her first 10K ever! She ran out of time to pick up her chip so is reported only in our results. Tom Wells ran with daughters Katie and Lizzie bringing them in at 1 – 2 in their age division.
238 male, 236 female finishers in the 5KM.
260 male, 192 female finishers in the 10KM.

RUN WITH THE NUNS 5KM & 1 MILE            January 15, 2005
War Vets Park      St Petersburg, Florida

The times look as if the wind was blocked a bit by the shelter from the trees at this forest venue. Kyle Groh's mom, Kathy directs this race. Scott who has been coming to track and the long run from Demens Landing was the only participant from our ranks in the main event.
Kyle was second overall in the Mile.
There were 49 male, and 28 female finishers in the 5KM. event.

HOUSTON MARATHON                                      January 15, 2006
Convention Center       Houston, Texas

Kenya's David Cheruiyot defended his winner's title from last year. Impressively, the women's winner Firaya Sultanova-Zhdanova of the Russian Federation was forced to walk some over the last two miles from an injury and her time was just one second over the Masters course record!
Mike PR'd by 47 seconds over his New York City performance in 2002. Jonathan was planning to run the half, but opted for the entire marathon distance.

CLEARWATER HALFATHON                           January 22, 2006
Coachman Park       Clearwater, Florida

Christy was racing the clock the entire way focusing on her goal of 6:30 per mile pace. Her effort placed her third entrant to cross the line and the overall women's win. 46 year young Amy was first Master followed in closely by 27 year young Draceana. David plunked down his $60 late entry fee as he signed up day of race and was cheered on by Forerunners/Mad Dogs/WFYRC water station workers, "Go Thumper"! Chris Coleman cut his Sunday run short to join in the water station cheering/fun/work.
Forced by construction to reduce to a halfathon, race director decided to make it an Inaugral halfathon event. A positive move and attitude! Next year the plan is for the full marathon and a halfathon to take place on the same day.
There were 182 male, and 126 female finishers.

DAILY NEWS HALF MARATHON                    January 23, 2006
Cambier Park       Naples, Florida

Women's winner Firaya Sultanova Zhdanova won the Houston marathon last weekend. There were several high profile runners in this prestigeous event.
Chip and Sue were the most happy reporting their performances.
Chip, because he's on track for sub 3 at Boston this year. Sue was happy to run the distance so soon after her shoulder surgery. All week the weather conditions had been nice cool mornings. It changed to warm and humid over night. Lenore ran out to the 5 mile mark but decided to turn back as she came down with the bad cold virus that is going around.

The women's course record was broken for the second year in a row, earning Hiromi Ominami, the women's leader an additional $2,500 bonus over the $5000 prize money for the win. Weather conditions were described in news coverage as mild temperature, 68 degrees with a stiff headwind at the start and then again near the finish.
Marcia took over thirty minutes off of her previous PR!
10,000 finishers for the two events. We had no one participating in the Half this year.

Callaway Gardens       Pine Mountain, Georgia

The men's leader continued his streak of marathon wins ... the fourth of four marathons since the new year and also got his third course record of the year on this hilly double loop course.
Grand Masters Linda Mason won the women's race Overall by over twenty five minutes! She and husband Mike Barber love this area and plan to relocate there one day.
Don Clark, our 69 yr old Georgia transplant, described the weather conditions as monsoon-like and decided he wasn't going to flog himself about his time!
