FORERUNNERS JANUARY 2002 RACE RESULTS

9TH ANNUAL DISNEY WORLD MARATHON
Lake Buena Vista, Florida                                       January 6, 2002

The cold front was blowing in on this cloud covered day that turned into a cold rainy one at about 3½ hours into the events. Coach and Daryl were whisked into the Florida’s finest tent by their loving spouses before the sky opened up. First time marathoners Jennifer and Cindy did very well. Maria fell short of her time goal of sub 3:55 and is looking to find another one to get that Boston qualifier. Cesar Pr’d.

3RD ANNUAL GULF BEACHES MARATHON
Clearwater, Florida                                                 January 20, 2002

Lisa Valentine won the women’s race by 25 minutes on this dastardly morning. January’s normally cool weather was replaced on this day by 100% humidity fog and 70f temperatures at the 7:05a.m. start. The day turned flat out steamy at 3 hours into the event when the sun reached high enough to start the soup boiling. Ken Hetherington, from the cold wilds of Nova Scotia, managed his way to a Boston qualifier. Sherry Denner did very well in her first go at the distance with proper training. Mary Handsel ran tough and PR’ed by seconds. Jean Lindley bested her Hops Marathon time by 1 minute. Here’s hoping for Winter to arrive before Spring.

RUN FOR SHELTER 5KM                                    January 25, 2002
Ybor City            Tampa, Florida

Reports have this course as pure junk, with the 7pm start in a partially paved construction zone in the dark. How long was it? A better question is, how short was it! 477 finishers.

23RD ANNUAL FLATLANDERS CHALLENGE 10KM
Spring Lake, Florida                                              January 26, 2002

The most brutal 10km in Florida lived up to its challenge with hills, or were they mountains at mile 3 & 4. For its first 21 years, this was a road course in downtown Brooksville. Now it is part cross-country, out in the country. Chip arrived a scant 10 minutes before race time and then missed the gun. Sorry Chip, in spite of your watch, the time you get is the one you see on the clock at the finish. 155 survived.

13TH ANNUAL DAILY NEWS HALF MARATHON
Cambier Park            Naples, Florida                   January 27, 2002

With sixteen Forerunners women and nine men in attendance, the Daily News Half Marathon was our largest out of town event in several years. Once again this lost Winter, the weather did not cooperate, bringing a warm and humid tropical morning to this mostly residential course in posh South Naples. Race director Perry Silverman once again produced a quality event in every way, with a certified distance course, prerace dinner, post race breakfast, 5-year age group cash awards, and electronic chip timing. All for the $20 entry fee. A couple of our local Tampa Bay race promoters might want to take notice, assuming they want knowledgeable runners to continue attending their races. Looks like 1274 finishers on this morning in Naples.
